Unitree G1: What the Most Affordable Humanoid Robot Can Actually Do

Humanoid robots dominated tech headlines in 2025, but most of the famous ones — Figure, Tesla Optimus — aren't for sale. The Unitree G1 is different: it's a production humanoid you can actually buy, and it's the reason "affordable humanoid" stopped being an oxymoron.

What it is

The G1 is a human-scale bipedal robot — about 1.32 m and 35 kg — that walks at roughly 2 m/s and offers 23 degrees of freedom in the base build, up to 43 in the EDU configuration. It folds down for transport, which matters more than it sounds when you're moving a humanoid between a lab and a demo.

What it can actually do

The EDU build adds richer sensing (3D LiDAR, depth camera, mic array) and optional onboard NVIDIA Jetson Orin compute, so you can run your own perception and control stacks rather than a locked firmware.

Where it fits

If your goal is hands-on humanoid R&D — a university group, a robotics startup, a corporate innovation lab — the G1 is the clearest on-ramp without a six-figure budget. If you're expecting a robot that autonomously does warehouse work today, that's a different (and much more expensive) class of machine.

The bottom line
