Pudu BellaBot: autonomous food delivery robot

The Pudu BellaBot is one of the most widely deployed service robots in the hospitality industry. Developed by Pudu Robotics, it is designed to automate the repetitive task of carrying food and goods between a kitchen or service point and tables or rooms. Its recognizable cat-face display — capable of animated expressions — became a defining feature that helped normalize the presence of service robots in public-facing environments such as restaurants and hotels.

Load capacity and physical design

The BellaBot features four stacked trays, with a total payload capacity of up to ~40 kg (approximately 10 kg per tray). This allows it to serve multiple tables or deliver multiple orders in a single trip, reducing the number of journeys staff need to make during busy service periods.

Navigation technology

The robot uses dual-SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) navigation, combining LiDAR-based and visual mapping to build and maintain a model of its environment. This allows it to operate reliably in dynamic, crowded spaces without requiring fixed infrastructure such as floor markers or rails.

Three RGBD (depth-sensing) cameras provide spatial perception across a ~192° front detection angle, with obstacle detection effective at ranges beyond 10 m. The system reacts to detected obstacles in as little as 0.5 seconds. An automotive-grade suspension system stabilizes the trays during movement to minimize spillage or disturbance to carried items.

Power and operational continuity

The BellaBot uses a quick-swap battery design, meaning depleted batteries can be exchanged rapidly without extended downtime. This makes continuous, around-the-clock operation feasible in high-throughput environments.
